How does the Ellipse permanent hair reduction treatment work?

The visible light from the flashlamp is guided via a glass prism to the hairy area. Hair contains pigment (melanin) that absorbs the light and converts it into heat. This heat is led through the hair into the hair follicle which is then destroyed and rendered unable to produce a new hair.

To ensure optimal light transmission to the hair a thin layer of gel (similar to that used in ultrasound) is applied to the skin. The hand held applicator is then slid over the entire treatment area by moving it exactly one width after each flash of light.

Can all hairs be treated?

As the treatment relies on absorption of light in the hair pigment (melanin) the most efficient treatment is seen with dark hair. The lighter the skin the more effective the separation is between hair and skin colour making treatment easier. However, the unique software of the Ellipse System has pre-programmed setting for different hair and skin colour combinations that adjust the energy output accordingly.

How long does an Ellipse permanent hair reduction treatment take?

The glass prism of the Ellipse applicator which guides the light to the skin is 1 cm by 5 cm so a large number of hairs are targeted in one flash of light. A facial treatment takes around 20 minutes where as on the back or both legs take 60 to 120 minutes.

Does it hurt?

No anaesthetics are required and most people describe the sensation as similar to that of a rubber band snapping onto the skin. Skin may feel warm and tingle slightly after treatment. Most clients tolerate the procedure well.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after treatment?

The light is a completely safe, visible light so no special precautions are needed. However, it is important not to remove hair by epilation or waxing 4 weeks before treatment to ensure that as many hair follicles as possible contain a hair and thus can be destroyed by the light. Since tanning takes place by accumulation of pigment (melanin) in the skin it is also important to avoid tanning before and during the treatment sessions. Otherwise the skin will also absorb the heat which makes treatment less effective.

Generally no post-treatment is necessary but people with very sensitive skin may benefit from using a soothing cream for a few days. It is also recommended to limit sun exposure and to use sun screen (SPF 20 ) for a few weeks following treatment.

How many Ellipse permanent hair reduction treatments do I need?

Hair growth is cyclical as hair follicles go through resting and growing phases. Only follicles in the growth phase contain hair and are destroyed by the heat. Resting hair follicles need to enter the growth phase before they can be destroyed by the Ellipse treatment. It is, therefore, necessary to repeat the treatment at intervals until all hair follicles have been through the growth phase.

The length and timing of the growth cycles are affected by numerous factors such as body site, hair density, thickness, ethnic origin, hormonal status and age. Usually 3-6 treatments are need and the intervals between treatments are typically 1-3 months.

How does this treatment work for your skin?

The Ellipse flash lamp produces light, which is carefully filtered before it reaches the skin; this ensures that only light of the correct "types" (technically described as "wavelengths") are allowed to reach the skin - the non-useful wavelengths are removed by the filters. The light that is allowed through has been chosen because it is the sort that two natural body substances respond to. Age spots contain higher than normal amounts substance called melanin. Diffuse redness is caused by an increased number of tiny blood vessels which contain hemoglobin. When cells containing a lot of melanin or hemoglobin are hit with the correct type of light, they heat up and are destroyed within a few thousandths of one second.

Can I be treated?

Furthermore, it is recommended to use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) for a few weeks following the treatment.

How does this treatment work?

Ellipse treatment works by directing well controlled pulses of light into the upper skin. The light is absorbed by one of the body's own natural chemicals - haemoglobin - found in the red blood cells.

Haemoglobin converts the light energy into heat. The heat is transferred to the wall of the blood vessel, which are permanently damaged and removed by the body' own defence mechanism. The method of converting light to and using it to destroy the target without damaging the surrounding tissues is called Selective Photothermolysis.

The visible light produced by the ellipse system is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount to energy to destroy the vessel. Best results are obtained on patients who have light to medium skin.

What areas can be?

The face, neck & chest are areas that can be treated. You may need 2 - 4 treatments, one month apart for best results.

How long does the treatment take?

The glass prism of the Ellipse hand piece which guides the light to the skin is 1cm by 5cm enabling treatment of a large area in one flash. This treatment is non invasive and can be performed in 10 - 15 minutes for small areas. If treating the full face, it may take up to 20minutes. Expect a total of 2 - 4 treatments.
